Should Leran go to Uganda or take a fellowship?

Two weeks ago I was accepted to go to Uganda for six weeks this summer to help a rural community prevent/treat HIV. Today I also (after a 4 month search) got accepted a fellowship job. The training/start date for the job begins before the Uganda trip ends. If I cannot work things out with my potential employer to allow a later start.

My passion is human rights advocacy and my long term career plan is to work on behalf of human rights and/or international development. Both personally and professionally going to a developing country, specifically one in Africa would be tremendously beneficial. At the same time, the job is a 2 year fellowship in advocacy and organizing for public interest causes. Not my specific interest and the pay is low, but it is a good organization and should be great experience. I've had trouble getting a job in this awful economy, so I'm a bit desperate and happy to have a job offer.

  1. Hi Leran, Some people are curious to know how old you are – and want to factor it into their decision making. Can you let us know? Thanks!

  2. Where is the fellowship and what is the pay?

  3. In my opinion, you should travel. If you don’t do it now, you will quite possibly settle down and not do it later. The same cannot be said about the job.

  4. I found your blog on google and read a few of your other posts. I just added you to my Google News Reader.
