How much alcohol should “Soon to be Wed” buy for his wedding?
I am getting married later this year and am anticipating about 230 guests. My caterer is allowing us to buy our own alcohol to cut down on costs. The nice thing is that the wholesale liquor distributors have a program where any unopened and unchilled alcohol can be returned for a refund. So I anticipate over-buying, but I have no idea what the breakdown should be of alcohol nor the total amount.
Here are the options that I have thought of for breakdowns and total amount:
- Assume 0.5 bottle of alcohol per person and have a 40-25-15-10-10 breakdown on vodka, whiskey, gin, rum, cognac respectively plus 4 beers a person.
- Assume 1 bottle of alcohol per person and have a 40-25-15-10-10 breakdown on vodka, whiskey, gin, rum, cognac respectively plus 2 beers a person.
- Assume 0.5 bottle of alcohol per person and have a 30-40-15-10-5 breakdown on vodka, whiskey, gin, rum, cognac respectively plus 4 beers a person.
- Assume 1 bottle of alcohol per person and have a 30-40-15-10-5 breakdown on vodka, whiskey, gin, rum, cognac respectively plus 2 beers a person.
- Other (please suggest other option by posting a comment)
If I am missing any type of hard liquor above that should be present, please let me know by leaving a comment.

Depends on size of bottles (and size of guests too, I suppose). For example, a 1 litre/liter bottle will yield between 25 and 30 shots/pours (@ typically between 1 and 1.25oz per pour). So, the .5 bottle/person assumption (assuming 1L bottles) has everyone drinking about 12-15 drinks + beer, on average. Also, I think you’ll go through more rum than gin (and maybe even whisky, but that largely depends on Indian contingent).

Very good point, Anil. I think we need to understand the guest list a little better before answering this appropriately. I mean, if I were serving my Irish family, I would give more weight to beer and whiskey. The other liquor would probably only be used for some sort of “fire show” or chick drinks. Like I said, it just depends. By the way, if you end up with too much whiskey, I know an Irish family that would buy it off you for cost.

As the liquor distribution people or the caterers!

You could also make it simpler and only serve beer, wine and coolers?

1 bottle/person seems a bit much. how will all these drunkards get home?!
